Leaving home

One thing you never see on a college campus is a high school letterman jacket.

What was once a prized possession worn with pride now gets retired to the closet.

Just like Andy in Toy Story 3 who parts ways with his beloved Buzz and Woody as he prepares to leave home for college, we all outgrow things as we all grow older.

Our faith is no different.

“More than any other time in a person’s life, leaving home is the most significant transition you’ll face.”

Life is a series of graduations, not limited to commencement ceremonies that award degrees at the completion of one level of education and movement to the next.

We’re also meant to graduate from one level of faith to the next, or one “degree” of glory to another (2 Corinthians 3:18).

The ultimate test college students face today is not one they will take during finals week to determine GPAs, scholarships, or impressive resumes.

It is the test of faith. A faith that engages the head, heart, and hands.

So what do you do when you know tests are coming up?

How do you leave home with responsibility and intentionality?

That’s the question campus minister Tyler Ellis addressed when asked to speak at a high school graduation ceremony.
